Copper cylinders
Copper cylinders are the old fashioned way of heating your home's water and are mostly found in older homes, these water heaters can still be installed and repaired by are not as economical as the modern water heaters.
The most common problem with these water cylinders are the immersions burning out or low pressure on the taps as these tanks are feed by a separate water tank in the loft or above the water heater.

Thermal hot water cylinders
Thermal hot water cylinders are mostly found in flats. The reason being you can install these tanks anywhere in a flat as you do not need to put any safety pipes outside.
They work by heating the water inside the tank and then the mains water is pumped though the tank and into a heat exchanger. This then heats the water quickly at mains pressure making the heated water last longer than an unvented and copper systems.
Gledhill & Pulsacoil water heaters are normally run on Economy 7 electric as it heats up at night when electricity is cheaper. However, if the water cools down too much throughout the day it has an in-built boost button.
The downside to these thermal storage systems is that there is a lot that can go wrong. It is recommended you get them checked every year. Aqua Plumbing repair, service and install all thermal stores.
Unvented water heater
Unvented water heaters are the modern day water heater replacing the old vented copper cylinder. The unvented water heater system is mains pressure giving you better flow rate out of the taps and are a good system if you have more then one bathroom as a combination boiler may not be adequate to give you enough hot water.
The unvented tank can be either an indirect cylinder where it heats up through a gas boiler or a direct cylinder that is heated by an immersion element.
The unvented hot water cylinder is very reliable but it is recommended that you have them serviced annually to get the safety devices checked.

Instant hot water units are a small electric tank that heats a small amount of water quickly. They are mostly used under kitchen sinks or above basins for washing hands or electric showers
